Life on Wings on Video!!

I am always, always on the hunt for Ern Baxter resources so was thrilled to find a series of nine videos on You-Tube that make available the whole classic amazing sermon that has formed the name of this blog! Here they are;

The "Eagle" Song!

Ern Baxter on the People of God

What a way to start the week:

"God is intent on having a people in the earth and in this hour and thank God I see them emerging. He is going to have a people in this hour that is going to bear a corporate witness to the majesty of God and they are not going to do it all chalked up and fractured and fighting with each other - they are going to learn the fellowship of the angels and they are going to come into corporate unity and government and authority and they are going to show the worldwide government that in the world there is a government that really works!".

The Power, Terror and Danger of Fear

A while back I once did a Bible study for my mum on how many times the Bible commands that "we do not fear". I can't quite remember the exact amount but I know for a fact that the Bible verses stretched to at least four A4 pages. That means that when Jesus said "Don't fear" - it was a command that carries the same weight under law as other more popular commands such as "do not murder". So essentially if you are living under an Old Covenant mentality or a mixture of law and grace - if you fear ANYTHING then you are as guilty as though you had murdered or committed adultery.

So thank God we are no longer under law!!! Because I don't know about you - but I fear ... frequently!

Why is fear so absolutely powerful and terrible yet so against all that God is? I learnt something about fear this week. I've been working at the Children's Hospital on the Swine Flu response team - and it has involved taking a multitude of phone calls from worried and sometimes frantic parents, staff and children who "fear" that they may have come into contact with swine flu, who "fear" that they have caught swine flu, who "fear" that if they have swine flu then they may die - a multitude of fears! And I confess I caught something of that burden upon them. Each individual I spoke to broke my heart hearing the worry and the concern in their tone. One person rang back frequently throughout the day desperate for an answer as to whether they were swine flu positive or not.

My dearest friend Ursula describes fear so vividly;

"I looked around and on about half of the church were these black demons. I'm going to try to describe it here. They were almost tar like, sticky, and they held onto the upper half of the peoples bodies. They clung with their legs around the bodies of their victims, their faces plastered over thier victims faces, covering their faces with black tar like goo, and their hands were plastered over their ears. I was so confused, and really concerned. I cried out to Jesus, "Jesus, what is this!!" ... Then the Holy Spirit answered me, in His beautiful voice of rushing waters He said to me, "Ursula, that is fear". I was like, "WHAT?". He explained to me that the demon I was seeing was fear. It clung like sticky tar, and stuck to everything that touched it. It was contagious. Transferable and imprisoning His people".

Ursula then went on (I believe) to prophesy;

"God is raising up a people who will throw off the shackles of fear, who are allergic to fear".

I think I sensed that today and quite surprisingly. I always wrongly imagined that getting rid of fear would involve "discipline" and "Bible study" and "quiet times". Pete Day blogs only when he has something to say - and boy did he have something to say about the glory returning! The same principle is true of getting rid of fear. I was driving through the torrential Birmingham rain home and I was listening to the Prom Praise album featuring Keith Getty. The assembled Royal Albert Hall crowds were singing the glorious hymn; "And Can It Be?". And the words blasted out (I never have my music quiet in the car!);

"I woke, the dungeon flamed with light - My chains fell off! My heart was free! I rose, went forth and followed Thee! No condemnation now I dread! Jesus and all in Him is mine! Alive in Him my living Head and clothed in righteousness divine! Bold I approach the eternal throne and claim the crown through Christ my own!".

Not familiar with it? Here's a choir singing it;

And I felt an awesome sense of light flaming the car as I drove. Suddenly I realised why the devil hates and fears the truth of grace so much. "Perfect love casts OUT fear". Once we grasp exactly how much the Father loves us so unconditionally and irrationally - then fear cannot keep it's "tarry, sticky" hold on us anymore. It just lets go. Why else does the Bible say; "Keep yourself in the love of God?". That's not a legalistic command! It's a life-saving call! Love isn't a nice, sloppy sentimental option! Love casts out fear. Love and fear cannot co-exist. If we know God's love, we just will find fear grows less and less.

How many of us can claim that we boldly approach the eternal throne and claim a crown!? To all those out there who like me have felt the sticky, revolting touch of fear and long for the dungeon to flame with light and find our chains are OFF and our hearts are FREE!!

The Supremacy of our God!!

I must admit I am continually finding the supremacy and almighty power of our God to be such a complete and utter rest during these times. I hate the fact that I seem to be a person who lets circumstance throw me off discipline. I don't mean that legalistically. What I mean is that I hate when I get depressed or upset or get struggling that I stop transcribing awesome sermons and find it so hard to get into activities that I know will bless and benefit me such as going to church!

The only thing that I can do - it seems - is worship and rest and bask in worship.

And then it occured to me. Maybe that's the point! Maybe that's what God actually wants - just to rest and stop striving and let Him do what He does best. So I've been completely basking in worship albums over the past few days and while I've been down in Bristol at Ma and Pa Bowen's for the Father's Day weekend. Mainly "Salvation's Song". And this wonderful video from Phatfish at Newday.

I hope my energy and enthusiasm will come back very soon - I detest feeling lazy! But until then the fact remains - He is so worthy of worship! And I am thrilled to find a video that carries the entire beautiful Stoneleigh recording of "Before the Throne". I tried but could only capture it in three. Here's the entire thing;

Grace in Action!!

There can be a lot of talk about grace and righteousness and indeed the more preaching and teaching we hear that is devoid of legalism the better. But I find myself getting twitchy when it all remains theoretical with no hint of grace in action. Grace where the rubber hits the road. Grace where it begins to change lives! There are some such glorious amazing verses in the Bible that we can only begin to dream of coming to pass in our lives - yet it must be the will of God! Or why else would it be in the Bible?!

"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe." - Ephesians 1:18-19

"Surpassing greatness of His power towards us" - what does that actually mean in action? I think that surpassingly great power is evident in the life of our great High Priest - Jesus Christ. I've been impressed recently with the word; "Immediately" in the Gospels.

"Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him ... immediately his leprosy was cleansed." - Matthew 8:3

"Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him" - Matthew 20:34

" ... she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak ... Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction" - Mark 5:29-30

One touch! And everything changed. I love this song from Grapevine;

Just one touch! But surely we shouldn't only limit that historically to Jesus Himself and maybe His disciples. Surely that is the legacy of the surpassing greatness of His power towards us who believe! One touch - and everything is changed!

That's why I love Rob's sermon; ""The Administration Of Healing Authority" - it changes the emphasis from the traditional charismatic praying and pleading with God to heal someone to "just one touch". I was listening to one of Rob's most recent sermons and he spoke about how our focus and emphasis shouldn't be hoping for more signs and wonders and instead how to increase in our understanding of the glory and wonder of God's grace and lavish unconditional love towards us. Just one touch. That's all it takes to open our eyes to the understand of what Jesus Christ accomplished for us at the Cross!

Faith in a Good God!!

I don't know about anyone else but faith in God is easy when life is okay. When trials are minimal and life isn't a challenge then it is easy to believe in a good God! But when life is hard and God seems to be distant, then it can be hard to keep believing, keep the faith. Human behaviour seems to be to try and "rush" those hard times. But Terry Virgo wrote today;

"Delay is not like the commercial time on TV – time to flick through the channels; time for short-term distractions until returning to the plot. Delay is part of the plot! Delay is God’s way of proving you, testing you to see what’s in your heart".

I've been typing up some of the sessions from the Dales Bible Week 1977 for a friend and Ern Baxter also spoke on faith.

"God is constantly saying to you and me when we are frightened or when our faith is low, he is saying – remember! I made those stars! I made the petals of that flower! I made the magnificent machine of your body! He is constantly reminding us that He is the God of creation and as the God of creation; He challenges my faith to believe Him! What better ground of faith have I than a God who not only made all things but who upholds them by the consistency and integrity of the Word of His authority".

That's why I think it is so advisible for those who do suffer with depression to get out at least once a day and walk somewhere. Just seeing creation! Just seeing the works of God's hand! Just seeing all this reminds us that God is still in total charge and sovereign control of the universe and we are safe in His hands. You can't get better anti-depressant therapy than that!

D A Carson Articles!!

Since the Carson and Piper interview I'm still in a reading sort of frame of mind. Thanks to this tip by Dave Bish - I found a list of available articles by Don Carson on the "Gospel Coalition" website. His books are all favourites of mine and are on my shelves, but I've always been frustrated by how to follow and get hold of the articles that these men write without subscribing to every expensive journal around! This one prayer has been answered - here's the links to PDF files. My printer is going to be busy! I was particularly struck by something Piper said in the interview about;

"When you go to school, don't choose classes. Choose teachers. Find the teachers who do it and model it best and take as many classes as you can. It doesn't matter what they teach. I would say that about college and I would say that about seminary. Don't take classes. Take teachers. Ask around - find out who is the thinker and modeller".

Don Carson has been one such man that I've tried to learn as much as I can from (since my university days!). John Piper of course would be another, as well as Ern Baxter, Terry Virgo, Rob Rufus and I could name many more!
